The Sevenstones Inn was orginally built
25 years ago in 1975 by J. Goddard. It stands on the site of
former stable buildings which were converted into the pub as
it is today, a long low spacious building with large surrounding
gardens.
A view of the pub before renovation
The pub was named after the sevenstones reef, an outcrop of rocks
that lies some miles off Lands end to the East-North-East of
St.Martins.The reef is notriously dangerous to shipping and over
250 wrecks have been recorded there since the 17th century. The
earliest known wreck was the "Revenge" which foundered
on the reef on the 30th November 1674, with the loss of all but
2 of the 17 crew
In response to this a lightship was introduced in 1840, and one
still operates in the area to this day - however wrecks continued
to happen at the rate of more than one a year well into the 20th
century - this included HMS Pincher a royal navy destroyer which
sank on the 24th July 1918.
However probably the most famous and devastating wreck evr to
occur was that of the super tanker the Torrey Cannyon, at the
time of its loss it was one of the worlds largest tankers carrying
119,328 tonnes of crude oil. It hit the reef on the 18th March
1967 and quickly broke up - it was subsequently bombed to burn
off the oil but still caused an oil slick 30 miles long by 8
miles wide which badly damaged the Cornish coast. As a result
a 5 mile exclusion zone to shipping was put into place around
Scilly to prevent such a disaster ever happening again.
